Last February 13, Natasha Ong, representing Davao Christian High School bagged the second place in Oratorical and Extemporaneous competition in the 5th Region-wide Inter-High School Speak UP! Competition.
Natasha Ong was one of those skilled enough to qualify for the final round. After a close fight with the other contestants, Natasha was hailed as first runner-up.
In an interview with Natasha, she humbly expressed how happy she was with her achievement, “It was so unexpected, I didn’t see this coming. And I really worked hard for it. I started preparing on the first week of January and I practiced extemporaneous two weeks ago.” When asked about the importance of communication, Natasha answered, “Communication really does a lot of things. It bridges us to a lot of things. It can even save lives or bring us to greater heights.”
Overall, Viola Mae Bermejo of San Pedro College was awarded as Best Orator, Jerusha Hale Cortez of Philippine Nikei Jin Kai as the second runner-up, and Reychelle Moira Lagat of Precious International School of Davao as the champion of the Oratorical and Extemporaneous Contest.
The competition, held by The Communicators’ Guild (CommGuild) of the BA Communication Arts Program of the University of the Philippines Mindanao was held at Abreeza Ayala Mall. Ten schools participated in the event, with its year’s theme being, “Make Every Voice Count: Harnessing Communication for a Participatory and Sustainable Social Development” The incorporation of the Script Writing and Radio Broadcasting contest was a first for the said event.
