On March 21, 2018, Davao Christian High School held it's first ever Mental Health Awareness event called, "Sunflower Day: Shining LIGHT on Mental Health." The event was initiated by several Junior and Senior high school students who wanted to open up the conversation on mental health and to provide support and comfort for those who needed it the most.
The event was held in the school auditorium with all the high school students in attendance. A plenary session was led by Rev. Dave Magalong, Jr. who encouraged students and teachers alike to leave behind the culture of shame and to start a culture of honor in their classrooms and in their homes. This was followed by an open forum where Ps. Dr. Keith Ching, a registed psychiatrist, and Mrs. Sashi Cagampang, the school Guidance OIC, joined Rev. Magalong to answer questions from the students about mental health and mental health rehabilitation.
Afterwards, the students returned to their classrooms for a homeroom activity where they affirmed and honored each other in the blessing circle. Students would leave a blank sheet of paper on their own chairs while the rest of the class took turns to write positive messages for each of their classmates.
A culminating activity was held in the quadrangle where students wrote notes of encouragement and truth and tied them with green ribbons on the preschool boundary gate. These messages were written so that anyone who would pass by and read them would have their lives blessed by the truth that Jesus remains to be our LIGHT - our true Hope and Life in this world and the next.
